No whales on the horizon for now but different species of dolphins passing around Madeira ! Pods of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) have been seen with around 15 individuals and with small calves too. The females weren’t too worried to present us their little ones as they approached our boat.
To protect these wonderful animals, whale watching companies are an important platform for monitoring cetaceans, as we do here at Lobosonda. We contribute to get more knowledge about the populations inhabiting the waters around Madeira. Raising awareness, implementing conservation measures and collecting scientific data allow for the preservation of these wonderful animals ! Madeira became a Whale Heritage Area in 2023 as research showed for the past two decades that the island provides a unique habitat for a lot of different marine organisms.
