            07.08.2026 – Mother’s protection

Published by Fatima Kutzschbach on August 14, 2026

Today, we were able to observe a small group of Blainville’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) off the coast of Calheta. There was one, possibly even two, calves swimming in the middle of the group—a reminder of how important close social bonds are for these remarkable animals.

The whales, however, did not seem particularly pleased by the large number of boats around them. Mothers with calves are often especially cautious. They constantly monitor their surroundings and do everything they can to protect their young from potential threats. This protective behaviour is essential for the calves’ survival.

Blainville’s beaked whales are among the most mysterious whale species in the world. They spend most of their lives far offshore and regularly dive to depths of more than 1,000 metres, often remaining underwater for over an hour while hunting squid. This is one of the reasons why encounters with this species are such special moments during whale-watching tours.

At the surface, they usually remain visible for only a short time before disappearing into the depths once again. They are calm, elusive animals and often avoid close contact with boats. Groups with calves, in particular, tend to be even more sensitive to disturbance.

Encounters like these should always be accompanied by respectful distances and responsible behaviour. We are guests in the home of these fascinating marine mammals, and the less we influence them, the greater our chance of observing their natural behaviour.
