It seems to be the season for baby dolphins. Both the Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and the Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) have had calves whose birth wrinkles were still visible on their bodies. While we had a peaceful encounter with these young, wonderful creatures in the morning, things got quite accelerating in the evening. Yes, of course, it’s always wonderful, sweet, and impressive to observe such tiny little ones in their natural habitat. But I’d like to point out that interactions always involve a disruption to the marine mammals’ daily routines. Such an experience is definitely great and exciting for us. But what if these small, delicate newcomers to the sea use up all the energy they’ve absorbed from their mother’s milk during a fast-paced ride? What does that mean for these delicate creatures who need their energy to grow? Time of the little dolphins! A reminder that mindfulness and gentleness should come first and foremost.
