            26.09.2025 – Perfect! Poo happens

Published by Fatima Kutzschbach on October 5, 2025

That morning, we drove far to the west, beyond Ponta do Pargo. We rarely get to see the coastline. But the long drive was worth it, as we had some very peaceful encounters with Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) and a few Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). The Pilot whales left behind a considerable amount of poo. It floated darkly in the blue sea. A wealth of nutrients for zooplankton, the basis of all life in the sea. A wealth of nutrients for phytoplankton, the basis of all life on our planet. Including you and me. Because phytoplankton produces 70% of the oxygen on our planet. So we can be appropriately grateful for such a dark mass in the sea.
