With Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) and Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) in the morning, followed by Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) in the afternoon we had an interesting mix of species today.
When the Sperm whales initiate a deep dive, we usually see them raising their tail flukes. For our guests this stunning display is usually the highlight of an encounter. For us guides, it is also the most important moment for photos – not just for aesthetics but also because the tail flukes are used for photo identifying individual sperm whales. Lobosonda is part of the ‘Whale Tales Project’ that is focussed on researching the movements of Sperm whales across Macaronesia. Based on unique markings, like nicks, notches and scars, on their flukes individuals can be recognised – almost like human finger prints. We have already had confirmed photo identification matches with individuals from the Azores which is very exciting.
