As we left Calheta harbour and headed east, we could feel the wind slowly gaining strength. White foam caps danced on the waves. We attentively observed the Sargassum seaweed floating on the surface of the sea. The Sargassum Sea is a fascinating ecosystem in the Atlantic, known for its unique diversity of marine life and provides habitat and food for a variety of sea creatures.
In the distance, we could see the elegant Cory’s shearwaters gliding gently over the waves. These are elegant seabirds known for their distinctive yellow beaks. They are skilful hunters. They feed mainly on fish and other marine animals. These birds are excellent fliers and glide effortlessly over the waves of the sea.
Off the coast of Ribeira Brava, we were lucky enough to experience a sighting of Short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus). These fascinating sea creatures are known for their social structures and complex behaviour. Pilot whales travel through the oceans in so-called schools. The presence of Short-finned pilot whales in these waters is a sign of the abundant food supply and the health of the ecosystem.
On our traditional fishing boat, we feel the vastness of the sea and the rhythm of the waves. Time seems to slow down and the hustle and bustle of everyday life becomes less important. Every glance across the water brings us closer to nature and to ourselves. The slow glide over the waves allows us to savour the moment and follow the flow of life. Despite riding the waves, we made it back successfully.
