18.07.2023 – A Symphony of Atlantic Spotted Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, Pilot Whales, and Sperm Whales!

Published by Marlene Cabral on July 26, 2023

Today, we had the pleasure of recounting an awe-inspiring day spent amidst the enchanting waters of Madeira, where the marine life put on a spectacular show. Let’s dive into the thrilling narrative of the remarkable sightings we had!

With the sun just starting to rise over the horizon, we embarked on an expedition of wonder and delight. As we ventured further from the shore, we were met with a lively group of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis), their playful nature contagious. They swam gracefully alongside our boat, adorned with their characteristic spots.

Amidst the frolicking pods of Atlantic spotted dolphins, we encountered the majestic Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). With their inquisitive eyes and knowing smiles, they seemed to greet us with a warm welcome, providing us with a heartwarming reminder of the profound connection between humans and these remarkable creatures.

As the clock struck noon, unexpected visitors graced us with their presence – Pilot whales- (Globicephala macrorhynchus). These striking cetaceans, with their bulbous heads and long, sleek bodies, exuded an air of wisdom as they effortlessly glided through the calm water next to our boat. But as their presence was not marvelous enough 3 calm sperm whales were in the surface taking slow deep breaths, as Pilot whales calves surrounded them wanting to play. Their appearance was a true testament to the incredible biodiversity found in these pristine marine habitats.

As the sun began its descent, casting a golden hue upon the waters, we reflected on the incredible encounters we had been privileged to witness. From the energetic Atlantic spotted dolphins to the gentle giants like the Pilot whale, and even the calm Sperm whale, Calheta proved again, to be a true haven for marine life.

Today’s journey was a poignant reminder of the magic that unfolds when we venture into the natural world and immerse ourselves in the wonders of its inhabitants. Let us cherish and safeguard these precious marine treasures, so future generations may revel in the same heart-pounding moments we experienced today.
