22.06.23 – Spectacular Encounter with Marine Marvels!

Published by Marlene Cabral on June 29, 2023

In the azure waters of Madeira, an extraordinary spectacle unfolded before our eyes. In the morning a pod of playful Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) greeted us with their charming smiles. They were not alone, as some miles ahead we could spot some energetic companions, the Common Dolphins (Delphinus delphis), creating a lively display of acrobatics and synchronized swimming.

Later on the day we encounter some Spotted Dolphins (Stenella frontalis) gracefully dancing through the waves, their sleek bodies adorned with enchanting spots. Joining the spectacle was the majestic Blainville beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris), with its elongated snout cutting through the water’s surface in a mysterious manner.

But the surprises didn’t end there! As we continued our journey, we stumbled upon a fascinating creature known as the Man o’ War (Physalia physalis). This curious marine invertebrate, with its striking tentacles, drifted gracefully along the ocean currents.

Not to be outdone, the avian inhabitants of Madeira also made their presence known. The graceful Cory’s Shearwater (Calonectris borealis) soared effortlessly above the waves, their wingspans casting shadows on the glistening sea.

Today’s sightings were a testament to the beauty and diversity of our Atlantic Ocean, reminding us of the incredible creatures that inhabit these watery realms. Each encounter was a reminder of the intricate interplay between species and the importance of protecting our marine ecosystems for future generations to cherish and admire.
