Again it were the Bottlenose dolphins, which were faithful and came close today on both trips. In the beginning of the sightings, they were shy and kept on moving on their ways. With some patience and the careful driving of our skipper Senhor Luis, we finally managed to gain their confidence. Some of the dolphins then came close and joined us for a while, riding in the bow-wave of the Ribeira Brava. Observing the animals so nearby, we could see some with a specific pattern of scars and notches on their backs and dorsal fins. Experts are able to identify individuals animals by this (Photo-Identification) unique pattern. Biologist from Madeira guess, that about 120 bottlenose dolphins, out of more than 600 dolphins which were counted per year, might be resident ones and live all year around in the waters of Madeira.
