Today we saw a lot of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) in the morning and late afternoon. Mid-day was notably empty of Atlantic spotted dolphins but we had Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) and Blainville’s beaked whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) instead. In the evening, we also found some Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). This mix of species with different species at different times shows how unpredictable sightings can be sometimes. The animals are always in motion which leads to a lot of variation even within the same day.
The Atlantic spotted dolphins were joined by a lot of Cory’s shearwater (Calonectris borealis) today. We often see these species together as they are hunting for the same fish. Interestingly, we also had some fun fish encounters this morning. We came across a dead puffer fish and then found a big wooden crate that was accompanies by some fish including massive dorados.
