            23.02.2018 – The Feast

Published by Marlene Cabral on March 8, 2018

Apex predators have evolved to be on top of the food chain, on our trips today we saw a perfect example of how this top predators give little chances of prey survival . A feeding frenzy that lasted all day could be observed, where shoals of Snipefish (Macroramphosus scolopax) were pushed to the surface by Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) and inclusive Tuna fish while at the same time being bombarded from the air by several species of seabirds. A feast that seemed to never have an end and with such abundance of prey on our second trip on board the Stenella, both species of dolphins were mixed together during the hunt. A peaceful coexistence due to the abundance of fish on this day…..
