18.06.2024 – It Is How It Is

Published by Marlene Cabral on June 24, 2024

Sometimes out at sea, we forget that on small islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the weather can change quickly. Only a few degrees can take cruisey north westerly winds into tricky and treacherous north easterlys. The North East winds we met today tend to conjure up one of the whale watchers most dreaded enemies, the “wake” or “wave” whale. Even for the most professional spotter, white capping waves cover animal tracks, and strong gusts can stop even the most intrepid of boats from getting too close. Therefore, given the conditions, we’ve had a great day. Difficult coordination between captains and spotters meant we still had sightings on 3/4 trips despite the weather.
