            17.10.2017 – WWS: Wal – Wave – Surf

Published by lobosonda on October 25, 2017

Today we had a tropical day, not so much in terms of weather, since it was grey and we had quite some waves, but in terms of animals due we had on every trip Tropical whales. During the morning trip the young whale approached us very curious and we had a good view on the head ridges. During the afternoon trip we even saw a breach and this is not a typical behavior for Tropical whales. If you check out the pictures closely you will discover the eye of a whale. We were lucky to observe a wave surfing whale close to the boat. What a breathtaking sight!

Tropical whales are members of the family Balaenopteridae which are also called Roqual. Roqual is a corruption of a Danish word meaning “tubed” or “pleated” whale. This family includes Tropical whales but as well Sei whales, Minke whales, Humpback whales and Blue whales.
