In the morning, we had an incredible encounter with a Bryde’s whale (Balaenoptera edeni) aboard the Ribeira Brava. The animal was very interested in the boat, following us, swimming around us and even looking at us as it was passing by the bow. It was an incredible and unbelievably close encounter with this gentle baleen whale that left everyone in awe.
The afternoon was very different with four species of dolphins: Atlantic spotted (Stenella frontalis), Bottlenose (Tursiops truncatus), Risso’s (Grampus griseus) and Rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis). There even was a Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) sighting during the mid-day Stenella trip. Overall, a day with fantastic sightings!
