            07.02.2023 – Oceans welcome

Published by Marlene Cabral on February 14, 2023

First day back on the sea since the last few months and I got blessed with nicest welcome back and the triple excitement!

Makes me feel the excitement that many of our clients have, being on the sea for the first time.
After a little delay in the start and the first rain drops, waves and weather stayed a little wild, but luckily, we were equipped with a crew of 13 weather sealed ones ready to conquer what there to come. Not long out and we welcomed the first of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) shortly followed by Pilot Whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus). Sailing the stormy seas, we kept our curse with both Bottlenose dolphins and Pilots. After moving a little to catch some wind and save some our bellies, we got the call for an eventually few whales’’ coming from direction Ribeira Brava from our Spotter Silviano. We took this call and played to good old Whale Watching waiting game until we were blessed with 3 blows of the second biggest animal in the world – Fin Whales (Balaenoptera physalus). At start it wasn’t sure which of the baleen whale species at is, as at first sight they all look similar in shape and size. After checking photos and with other members in our whale watching community, we realized its Fin Whales.
We stayed admiring the blows and slender bodies of those majestic creatures until everything well had to come to an end and we made our way back to the Marina in Calheta.
Thanks for the blessing’s ocean, forever grateful!!
