            05.07.2023 – A marine adventure

Published by Marlene Cabral on July 13, 2023

Welcome to the stunning shores of Madeira, where the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean hold secrets waiting to be discovered. Today was a day of incredible encounters and thrilling adventures as the marine life of Madeira put on a show like no other. Let’s dive into the mesmerizing sightings and scientific wonders that unfolded throughout the day!

The day started with a splash of excitement in Ribeira Brava at 9:30. The captivating Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis) took center stage, playfully darting through the waves and filling the air with their cheerful clicks and whistles. Their sleek bodies and distinct markings mesmerized everyone lucky enough to witness their graceful dance.

But that was just the beginning! As the clock struck 13:30 in the afternoon, a diverse ensemble of marine stars appeared. Joining the Atlantic spotted dolphins were the charismatic Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), their intelligent eyes glistening with curiosity. Alongside them, the Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) showcased their distinctive striped patterns, creating a vibrant tapestry of marine beauty. And as if that wasn’t enough, a special guest made an appearance—the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus), a rare and endangered species that delighted onlookers with its adorable presence. Truly a sight to behold!

The underwater world offered its own breathtaking encounters for those who dared to explore its depths. As snorkelers descended into the crystal-clear waters at 9:30, they were greeted by the playful Atlantic spotted dolphins once again. These magnificent creatures swam alongside the snorkelers, their curiosity shining through their every move. It was a surreal experience, a moment when humans and dolphins connected in a magical underwater realm.

But surprises didn’t end there! As the clock approached 5 o’clock, a grand finale unfolded. Bottlenose dolphins returned, joined by a lively group of Atlantic spotted dolphins. In their joyful presence, the ocean came alive with the grace and charm of Common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) and the enigmatic Blainville’s beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris). It was a breathtaking scene that celebrated the rich diversity of marine life found in the waters of Madeira.

Today was a day of wonder and excitement, where the scientific names of marine creatures came to life in vibrant displays. From the playful Atlantic spotted dolphins to the intelligent Bottlenose dolphins, and the enchanting Striped dolphins to the rare Mediterranean monk seal, each sighting was a gift from the ocean. Snorkeling alongside these remarkable creatures was an unforgettable adventure, reminding us of the deep connection we share with the marine world.

As the sun sets on another incredible day in Madeira, let us cherish these sightings and carry their magic within us. May they inspire us to protect and preserve the precious marine ecosystems that make such extraordinary encounters
