Today after many days of stormy weather we were finally able to go out on the ocean again. There was still a bit of swell, which was the residual swell from the last days of strong wind. These conditions wet not the easiest to find animals in the ocean, but Silviano our Spotter did a great job and spotted some Short-finned pilot whales (Globocephala macrorhynchus) and Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). It was not the easiest sighting, as the animals or we were disappearing in the trough of the wave. Both of these species are common animals around Madeira. The Pilot whales use the deep waters around the island to hunt for food, while Bottlenose dolphins being highly adaptive thrive in all of the oceans, from tropical to temperate seas. Both are social species, the Pilot whale living in a family group while the Bottlenose dolphins live more with his or her friends.
