            01.04.2019 – Zig-zag

Published by Marlene Cabral on April 12, 2019

Our traditional boat, steered by the incredible Sr. Luis this morning veered from east to west as we searched for whales and dolphins. We managed to escape the approaching raincloud drenching the coastline of Calheta and searched the calmer waters 4 nautical miles off the coastline under the guidance of Carlos, our spotter. A spotters work is just as dependent on the weather conditions as that of our crew at sea and the rain didn’t make his search from the coast any easier. But our team doesn’t give up and our perserverance bore fruit today!

An aggregation of Cory’s shearwaters (Calonectris borealis) suddenly occurred 3 miles outside Madalena do Mar, that revealed a feeding situation involving Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). These innately curious and interactive dolphins approached the bow of our Ribeira Brava in between their swift spurts of speed in pursuit of their prey. Our guests enjoyed every moment of this lovely encounter after such a long search, with their patience duly rewarded by the Atlantic!
